Manager:
Unit:
What:

Description: Implement one or more log hosts and mechanisms and policies for their use

Deliverables: To result in as many of the following as possible:

  • one or more log hosts
  • appropriate access rules for the logs held there
  • appropriate retention periods defined, and an automatic purge set up
  • a postprocessing mechanism
  • logging by some variety of syslog, to be determined
  • mechanism by which hosts can archive logs
  • mechanism by which hosts can upload logs and other files (e.g. process accounting data) for relatively short retention
  • network traps?

Case statement: This is a followon from DevProj 71 ("Logging policy and centralised logging"), where it was found that a good case could be argued for there being a central logging facility which would benefit at least some of our existing services.
