Review of AT3/4/5 network

Project ID:
173
Current stage:
Manager:
Unit:
What:

Description: The switches in AT3/4/5 are getting a bit long in the tooth, and there are suggestions that more ports are required over there, so it's about time for a review. This project should look at requirements for each floor (ports, link-speeds, ...) and, using them as a basis, present some upgrade-path options.

Deliverables:

  1. Report on network requirements for each of AT3, AT4 and AT5; and
  2. options for upgrades to switches and/or wiring, as necessary, with rough costs.

Now complete, as follows:

  1. Preliminary report: Description of existing AT-3/4/5 network
  2. Report on network requirements for each of AT3, AT4 and AT5; and options for upgrades to switches, with rough costs.

Note that any decision on which upgrade is chosen, if any, is outwith the scope of this project.

Why:

Customer: Students, AT-based staff

When:

Status:

Timescales:

Allow about a day to survey each floor, a couple of days to establish any future requirements, and a bit of time to work out sample upgrade paths and costs. A couple of weeks work in all.

Proposal:

Resources:

None for the project itself though, if the decision is taken to go ahead with a network upgrade, then

  1. there will be implications for the next spending round, and
  2. a follow-on project to manage the deployment will be necessary.

Plan:

As per the milestones.

Note that, if a decision is taken to upgrade the AT 3/4/5 network as a result of the report produced by this project, the expectation is that the upgrade itself would take place sometime in Summer 2011 (*), with procurement in about Easter 2011. Those dates set the overall timescale and deadlines for this project.

(* Any upgrade work will likely be disruptive; it will almost certainly need to done outside of normal term times.)

Other:

Dependencies: Note that some upgrade options may require additional cards in the AT core switches.
