Description: Produce a simple KVM based virtualisation service, using Redhat's tools.

This is implementing the first stage of the Replacement for VMware server proposal project

Deliverables:

  • Any required modifications to infrastructure to support KVM
  • Documentation for creation and management of VMs under KVM
  • At least one KVM hosting server

Plan:

  • Any required modifications to infrastructure to support KVM
    • Create package lists and headers for KVM under SL6
    • Install KVM on an SL6_64 server
    • Test bonding works
    • Test VLANs
    • Test for SAN issues
    • Check for auto-shutdown and auto-boot on host shutdown/boot
    • Investigate suspend/resume of guests
    • Understand and configure libvirt access controls
    • Check local command line access to consoles
    • Check remote command line access to consoles
    • Other stuff to be identified during course of project
  • Documentation for creation and management of VMs under KVM
  • At least one KVM hosting server
