loghost implementation
Description: Implement one or more log hosts and mechanisms and policies for their use
Deliverables: To result in as many of the following as possible:
- one or more log hosts
- appropriate access rules for the logs held there
- appropriate retention periods defined, and an automatic purge set up
- a postprocessing mechanism
- logging by some variety of syslog, to be determined
- mechanism by which hosts can archive logs
- mechanism by which hosts can upload logs and other files (e.g. process accounting data) for relatively short retention
- network traps?

Case statement: This is a followon from DevProj 71 ("Logging policy and centralised logging"), where it was found that a good case could be argued for there being a central logging facility which would benefit at least some of our existing services.

Resources: Hardware: lots of disc space, and a reasonable amount of power to process the logs.
